Some words from previous PIPS interns
My PIPS placement at AMI allowed me to work "behind the scenes" of the society and truly understand how essential science communications in order to further develop the field of applied microbiology. I have learnt new skills which I would not have got if it wasn't for doing my 12-week internship with AMI. This experience will certainly better prepare me for employment post-PhD!
My PIPS came at an exciting time for AMI. I was fortunate enough to be involved with many workshops for the rebrand, along with writing for The Microbiologist magazine and assisting in the running of the ECS symposium. I was able to really immerse myself with the ins and outs of the society, making my role and work very rewarding. Looking back, I gained a wide range of skills that will help me throughout my PhD, and beyond!
My internship at AMI was an extremely rewarding experience that allowed me to gain skills and experiences beyond that of academia. I was introduced to a wide range of opportunities I would otherwise not have had access to, including attending a major conference, speaking in parliament at Voice of the Future and writing for The Microbiologist magazine. My PIPS experience with AMI has better prepared me for the rest of my PhD and future career.
During my internship with AMI I was able to engage directly with science policy issues by networking with experts, working on responses to evidence calls from Parliamentary select committees and attending evidence sessions. I also gained invaluable experience in science communication and events planning.
My PIPS at AMI helped show me what it was like to work in a team and the in's and outs of communications, which later would become my career! I made the decision not to continue in academia, as many PhD students do, and without this internship I would have really been on the back foot when it came to finding a job.
