SfAM offers the opportunity for its members to apply for financial assistance in support of attending conferences, training programmes to learn new techniques or acquire new knowledge, or scientific meetings and workshops that are consistent with the Society’s objectives.

Grants are available on a competitive basis. The Professional Development Support Grant has no age limits and is aimed at any applied microbiologist, working or wishing to get back into work.

The primary purpose of the Professional Development Support Grant is to enable applied microbiologists to extend or broaden their knowledge, technical and vocational skills necessary for the execution of their professional and technical duties. Applications should highlight the benefits that will be gained by the individual, their organisation (if relevant) and the wider microbiology community and could include attendance at conferences, scientific meetings, workshops or other microbiology-related training programmes.

The Professional Development Support Grant is open to any member of the Society, regardless of their geographical location, but to be eligible you must be a current member and have been so for a minimum of 24 months at the time of making the application.

If applying for a Professional Development Support Grant, you must provide:

  • a letter explaining why this event is unique and why it is worth you attending

    • you should be upfront in your introduction and state your top three reasons for attending your chosen event

    • you should articulate how the event will benefit you and your organisation (if relevant)

    • if applicable include a few sessions you’d like to attend and a list of speakers/delegates you’d like to network with

  • a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or manager (if relevant)

  • a letter from your organisation detailing why they will not fund your attendance and why it is important that you should attend (if relevant).

We also ask all Professional Development Support Grant recipients to write a 1,200-word article for publication in the Microbiologist magazine within 6 weeks of their return from the event. This could describe a new technique and its benefits to the applied microbiology community, or document the latest research on a topic that you found to have wide significance. Alternatively, you could provide a spotlight on your career so far and outline any future plans, including how you and/or your organisation will benefit from you having been awarded this particular grant.

The maximum individual grant is £2,500. Further funding from other societies can be sourced by the individual if more substantial costs are involved, but this information MUST be provided in the application – ideally attaching a copy of your application for further funding. Day-to-day meals and drinks are at your own expense.

The grant is intended to cover reasonable travel costs, suitable accommodation expenses and registration fees as necessary. This grant will NOT cover subsistence costs.

Professional Development Support Grants are allocated on a competitive basis and in relation to the funds available. Only one successful Professional Development Support Grant application is permitted in a 3-year period per member.
