Small Research Projects and Equipment Fund

The Small Research Projects and Equipment Fund is available for SfAM members supervising a postgraduate research student, who has no funding from an additional source.

The Small Research Projects and Equipment Fund is available for SfAM members supervising a postgraduate research student, who has no funding from an additional source. The applicant must be a member of the Society. The fund will cover consumables, bench fees or a small piece of equipment required to complete their studies in the area of applied microbiology. Applications require official approval from the applicant’s employing institution but are not limited to those of any status (e.g. lecturer, professor, postdoc etc.).

Please note that the funding provided through the Small Research Projects and Equipment Fund cannot be used as payment in lieu of salary.

  1. The applicant must be an existing Full or International Member of the Society and have been so for a minimum of 12 months.

  2. Free ECS Undergraduate membership will be offered to the student for the remainder of the year if funding is successful.

  3. A member may not apply for further assistance from the Small Research Projects and Equipment Fund for 2 years.

  4. The maximum amount available for the grant is £3,000. The fund will cover consumables or a small piece of equipment.

  5. The applicant must provide a one-page overview of the research proposal and full justification for the support for funding.

  6. A one-page CV of the supervisor must be included with the application.

  7. SfAM will not fund the full economic cost of research.

  8. SfAM should be acknowledged in any publications that arise from the research and in the final thesis, and evidence provided to the Society.

  9. Applications MUST be countersigned by the institution’s finance officer.

  10. The applicant must complete an expense claim form (available from the Society). Expenses will be paid in one instalment on production of original receipts. Claims must be made within 18 months of the project end date. No payment will be made without this documentation.

  11. Applicants must provide a 250 to 500-word testimonial of how the grant has helped with their career development/scientific research within 18 months of the project end date. No payment will be made without this documentation.

  12. Reimbursement of the grant will only be paid to the institution by bank transfer directly into one appropriate bank account, normally in GB pounds sterling, euro or US/Canadian/Australian dollars. Under no circumstances will intermediary banks be used.
