The Society for Applied Microbiology supports biological science research and is currently funding a 3 year PhD studentship.
The next award will be in 2020 - applications will now be invited from potential supervisors for PhD studentships.
The closing date for applications is 15 November 2019.
Eligible projects are supervised at a recognised university or research institute. Potential supervisors can apply by submitting a summary curriculum vitae of both the supervisor and the nominated student, together with an outline of the proposed project of no more than 1000 words, to firstname.lastname@example.org. Shortlisted students will be invited for interview at the SfAM office in London or via a Skype link.
Projects should address important questions of applied microbiology that align with the objectives of the Society.
Studentships provide tuition fees up to the UK/EU rate (up to £4,327 per annum), a maintenance fee for the student (currently £15,009 per annum) and a bench fee of up to £4,000 per annum for the host laboratory. The studentship will begin in September/October 2020 for 3 years.
A key component of our PhD programme is a SfAM Integrated Placement (SIP), a 3-month integrated placement to provide the successful PhD student with the opportunity to carry out a work placement unrelated to their doctoral research during their PhD. Such experience is important both to help early career researchers understand the context of their research, and to expose them to the range of opportunities in which they can apply their PhD skills and training after they graduate. An additional 3 months of funding will be made available where necessary to facilitate this placement.
Three month placements are available at SfAM for students to gain experience of working in:
- organisational strategy
- science and innovation policy
- public engagement
- project management
The successful student will also be funded to attend an SfAM event during the third year of the studentship, and will be expected to present their results either as a poster or an oral presentation.
