Frequently asked questions when applying for a grant

Applying for a grant

Is there a minimum membership period required to apply for AMI grants?

Applicants must be current members of Applied Microbiology International with a minimum membership period of one year (or two concecutive subscription payments). Some grants require applicants to have a longer period of membership. The minimum membership period relates to the application deadline, and not the date of the event or project for which you are seeking funding. Specific details regarding minimum membership periods are available on each grant’s individual page.

If I have previously applied for a grant am eligible to apply again?

The eligibility of applicants who have previously been awarded the same grant differs depending on the type of grant. Please refer to the grant’s page for specific application criteria.

Do you have examples of successful grants?

Please refer to the past and current grant recipients and the testimonials we publish on the individual grant pages for examples. 

How do I apply for a grant?

Information on how to apply varies between schemes and is available on each grant’s individual page. Members should login to apply. When a grant is open for application, an Apply Now button will appear on its page. Please note, each application will be subject to further eligibility checks, for example, to check you fulfil the minimum membership criteria.

Can I save my application and come back to it later?

Unfortunately, you are unable to save your progress and return to it later so applications must be completed in one session. It is recommended that applicants complete answers to questions in a separate text document and alter them there, before copying the final responses into the application form.

Can I apply for a travel grant before my abstract is accepted?

Yes, however, awards will be subject to evidence of acceptance being provided prior to the event.

Can I apply for a grant after I have commenced a project or attended an event?

No – retrospective applications will not be accepted.

Am I eligible for a grant for a project which has received funding from other sources?

In general, yes, however, please ensure you advise us of any additional funding applied for, or awarded, as this will be taken into consideration when final claims of reimbursement are made. where else you have received and applied for funding from. Please note, the New Lecturer Research Grant will not normally be awarded to applicants who have already received a major research grant (£30,000+) from other sources.

Are late applications accepted?

We are unable to accept late applications. Grant deadlines are advertised in advance on the website, social media and in our newsletter, so please keep an eye out for these. 

When will I hear about the outcome of my application?

Unless specified otherwise in the specific grant’s terms and conditions, applicants can expect to hear from the Society six weeks after the deadline.

 

After award of a grant

How can I claim from my grant?

Grant holders must complete an expense claim form (available from the Society) which must be supported by all relevant receipts/invoices. Specific details regarding payment of expenses are available on each grant’s individual page. 

When will I receive funds into my account?

Funds will be transferred into nominated bank accounts within upon receiving a complete and accurate claim, including the submission of required supporting information and documents. Incorrect payment details will delay processing of the payment, therefore please ensure you have correctly entered your details.

What if I need to defer my grant start date?

Under normal circumstances we do not permit deferral of a grant’s start date, however, please contact us if there are exceptional circumstances which mean this will be necessary.

Do you give feedback to unsuccessful applicants?

No, feedback is not provided to unsuccessful applicants as most grant applications are anonymised according to our values on diversity, equity and inclusion. The decision of the grants panel is final.
