The ability of pathogenic bacteria to cause disease depends upon the production of virulence determinants whose synthesis is strictly regulated as an adaptation to particular environmental changes. A greater understanding of these regulatory processes at the molecular level may reveal potential targets for interference and hence intervention in the disease process through the action of new antimicrobial drugs.
