Early & Mid Career Scientist Opportunities

12 Jun 2019

We have been overwhelmed and delighted by the response of our members to become more involved with the Society’s ECS Committee.

So that we can try to involve as many respondents as possible, we would like you to select a more defined role of interest. We have positions available in the groups below. Please select your first and second choice.

Early Career Scientist (ECS) Committee Member (Undergraduate/Apprentice up to First Post-Doc/ Graduate or First Job)
The ECS committee are responsible for the overall organisation and planning of the ECS Research Symposium, especially around the conference venue and date, the budget and the overall technical content of the conference. The committee also advises the Executive Committee and assists them in making decisions on ECS related activities pertaining to the work of the Society. ECS committee members are appointed with the expectation that they will serve a three-year term and should actively partake in the role.

ECS committee members are expected to attend the ECS Symposium and be available for quarterly online meetings and one ‘in person’ meeting. The committee also have a WhatsApp group in which you will be expected to join.  Expenses are reimbursed for the costs ECS committee members incur when travelling on the behalf of the Society’s business. The costs covered include accommodation, subsistence (including meals and refreshments) and travel.

Mid-Career Scientist (MCS) Committee Member (3rd year of Post-Doc/industry job to Associate Professor)
The Mid-Career Scientist Committee is a newly formed arm of SfAM that hopes to bridge the gap between Post-Doctoral researcher and being a Primary Investigator.  MCS committee members will help to develop an annual activity/meeting/funding proposal.  If authorised, the event will be co-organised with the office team and hosted by the MCS committee.

The MCS committee will also provide feedback to the Executive Committee.  MCS committee members are appointed with the expectation that they will serve a two-year term and should actively partake in the role. MCS committee members are expected to attend MCS hosted events and be available for quarterly online meetings and to join a dedicated WhatsApp group.

ECS Regional Ambassador
SfAM Regional Ambassadors are enthusiastic, active and engaged members of the Society for Applied Microbiology who act as a key contact within their workplace/university and surrounding areas. Regional ambassadors showcase the benefits of membership, promote primarily ECS events (along with other relevant SfAM events), and encourage new and current ECS members to get involved with the society. ECS Regional ambassadors are appointed with the expectation that they will serve a two-year term (with a relatively light workload).

ECS Regional Ambassadors will report into the ECS committee and enjoy free attendance to the ECS Research Symposium.
